Our Winter Wonderland

I don't like snow.  I'm old now.  I find snow to be an inconvenience.   If my husband could be shut in with us because of the snow that would be great, but his employer doesn't see it that way.  So hubby goes off to work and I worry for the next hour waiting to hear from him to see if he made it or not.  Wives, it our jobs to worry.  I hate driving in it.  I think it's because of all the precious cargo I carry with me.  I fear running into a fixed object or someone running into me or being stranded on the side of the road with five littles.  None of those images sound appealing so I usually stay home.  The snow does have some perks I suppose.  First and the most important one in my opinion is moisture for our farm.  Any precipitation we can get we are thankful for.  This snow wasn't powder and it wasn't wet heavy snow...an in between so to speak.  This is great for our pasture as we need to reseed it so getting this moisture on the soil before planting is fantastic.  The wheat will benefit from it as well.  Not only for moisture, but insulation for the cold temperatures.  I've heard that across the nation many plants and trees are being affected my this extremely cold temperatures.  Several wine vineyards have lost thousands of plants and orchards are loosing trees and berry bushes.  We'll see how our trees and berries fared this spring.  We have been cold, but not numerous days of below temperatures that others have felt north and east of here.  Another perk is some play time with the four oldest.  We have been sledding in the pasture behind the four wheeler, making snowmen, and a snow fort.  They are the most excited about the snow fort!  The snow is starting to melt which means our snow time is coming to an end and mud into my house is coming.  I dread the mud...that is not a perk to snow :(

Our snow fort that lasted about 3 hours before it started to fall apart from melting :( But we worked together as a team and had a lot of fun!
It's warming up today into the 40's and this weekend will be in the 50's so our fun in the snow is coming to an end. Until the next snow storm...

Have a great day!

I want to be the best homesteader I can be, while teaching my children at home in the school room and outside on the farm.
